If I were doing this for personal use and didn't want to expend $$$$ to get real equipment I'd do the following: The easiest and quickest way to filter without spending a good stash of cash is to buy a filtering flask and hand vacuum setup. You'll need the following items: Filtering Flask (250-1000 mL) Hand Vacuum Pump w/Tubing 1-Hole Rubber Stopper (size 8) Solid Rubber Stopper (size 8) Buchner Funnel Filter Paper (Preferably .45 or .2 um) From here out it's cake. You attach your tubing to the flask's side-arm. Then insert the 1-hole rubber stopper into the opening on the flask. Next you'll insert your buchner funnel into the hole of the 1-hole rubber stopper. Then you place your filter paper into the buchner funnel, inject your solution into the buchner funnel and finally give the hand vacuum a few pumps to create a vacuum and speed filtration along. You then just keep refilling the funnel with your solution until the flask is either full, or you're done. Now when you're done filtering, you need to wait a minute after it's filtered all the solution so as that the pressure inside the flask has reached equillibrium with the atmosphere. Once the pressure has equalized then you need to take off the 1-hole stopper and buchner funnel and immediately place the solid rubber stopper into the opening on the flask. Next, you need to unattach the tubing from the side-arm and insert a stopper into this opening (it's a 6 mm outer diameter opening so it'll have to be small). Now that the vessel is completely sealed, and sterile, you'll insert a large guage needle (18-21g) into the solid rubber stopper. With the needle inserted, attach a large volume syringe (preferably 10-30 mL) to the needle, turn the flask upside down and draw out the solution. Finally, inject the solution into your sterile vials. VOILA! A few notes: I'd cut off the solid rubber stopper so as its not so thick. Find out where it fits snuggly into the flask and then cut off the excess. You can then use this excess and cut off a small piece to use as the stopper that goes into the side-arm (tiny opening you insert your tubing/vacuum unit to). Make sure you keep everything as sterile as possible which means wash the sh|t as well as throw all equipment into the oven to dry heat sterilize. Don't use anything to "wipe" out the flask etc. as you're bound to get particulate matter in the flask and then your solution. Let evaporation take care of that. Of course, go through the sterilization process with your vials as well. That's all I can think of right now, off the top of my head. If anyone has any questions/comments please feel free to elaborate. If I missed something or think of something else I'll add it in accordingly... On another note, another problem, especially for novice chemists, is ensuring that the solution doesn't just bypass the filter paper (IE the filter paper is not pre-wet accordingly and the solution essentially seeps in under the paper). To combat this you can use a metal washer to "hold down" the filter paper. It will slighlty decrease the effective filter area, but is better than the alternative of bypassing the filter. FYI use a washer that is appriopriate for your Buchner funnel (funnel typically range in the 55-120mm range 5-12cm). You also need to make certain to buy filter paper appropriate for your size Buchner funnel.
